Preparing for your in-home newborn session
First of all — congratulations! Whether you’re holding your baby in your arms or counting down the days until their arrival, I’m so honored to be part of this special season with your family. My in-home newborn sessions are designed to be cozy, relaxed, and full of connection. Here's everything you need to know to feel prepared and at ease.
What to Expect
Newborn sessions typically last between 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on your baby's temperament and needs. There's no pressure — we follow baby’s lead, allowing plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, or soothing breaks as needed. My goal is always to create a calm and peaceful environment that feels natural to your family.
I’ll Bring the Essentials
You don’t have to worry about props or wraps — I’ve got it covered. I bring a carefully curated collection of neutral wraps, blankets, and textures to swaddle and photograph your little one in a timeless way.
What to Wear
I recommend choosing one sweet outfit for your baby for the lifestyle portion of the session. This is typically when we’ll capture beautiful moments with mom, dad, and any siblings — think soft knits, classic onesies, or anything sentimental to you.
For the rest of the family, soft neutrals always photograph beautifully — whites, creams, taupes, or muted tones. Think cozy and coordinated, but not too matchy-matchy.
Preparing Your Space
Don’t feel like you need a spotless house — truly. We only need access to areas with the best natural light, often the nursery, primary bedroom, or living room. I may move a few things around to create clean, calm backgrounds, but no deep cleaning is required. Your home, just as it is, tells your family’s story.
Tip: If you’d like, open curtains or blinds in those well-lit areas before I arrive to let in all that beautiful natural light.
Getting Baby Sleepy for the Session
A sleepy baby helps us capture those dreamy, snuggled-up poses you’ll love — but don’t stress if things don’t go perfectly (we roll with it!). Here are a few gentle tips to help prepare:
• Keep baby awake for about 30–60 minutes before our session with a little play or bath time
• Give a full feeding right before I arrive to help them settle into a nice, milk-drunk sleep
• Dress them in a diaper and loosely wrapped in a blanket, so we don’t disturb them while wrapping
• Keep the house warm — babies love a cozy space! Have on a sound machine if your baby calms to that noise!
Of course, every baby is different — so we take breaks as needed, follow their cues, and create a calm, peaceful environment throughout the session.
Final Thoughts
This session is meant to feel like a slow Sunday morning — gentle, intimate, and full of love. I’ll guide you the entire time so you never feel unsure of what to do. The most important thing you can do is relax, be present, and soak in this fleeting season with your baby.
If you have any questions before your session or special details you’d like captured — I’d love to hear them.
Can’t wait to meet you and your little one soon. 🤍
These early days go by in a blur, but I’m here to help you slow down, soak it in, and preserve the magic — one frame at a time.
